General Information

[84th Annual Meeting Home Page]

Location

Pasadena Library (Courtesy of Greg Asbury/Pasadena Convention and Visitors Bureau)The 84th Annual Meeting of The Society of Rheology will be held in Pasadena, California on February 10-14, 2013; the optional associated short course will be offered on February 9 and 10. The technical program will take place in the Pasadena Convention Center/Conference Building, adjacent to the Paseo Colorado, a short walk from Old Town Pasadena and 1.5 miles away from the California Institute of Technology. A dynamic city centered in beautiful Southern California, Pasadena is a city of discovery – from dining and shopping to theater and art galleries.

Pasadena, the Crown of the Valley, is best known as the host of a celebration more than a century old, the annual Tournament of Roses Parade and Rose Bowl football game, every January. The City also boasts numerous cultural amenities, such as the Old Town with the famous Castle Green, an imposing seven story Moorish Colonial and Spanish style building sitting next to Central Park in Old Pasadena; the Norton Simon Museum, known around the world as one of the most remarkable private art collections ever assembled; the Gamble House, an outstanding example of American Arts and Crafts style architecture designed by Charles and Henry Greene in 1908 for David and Mary Gamble of the Procter & Gamble Company; Huntington Gardens, 120 acres of more than a dozen specialized gardens arranged within a park-like landscape of rolling lawns; Pacific Asia Museum, one of only four U.S. institutions dedicated to the arts and culture of Asia and the Pacific Islands; Pasadena Museum of California Art (PMCA), dedicated to the exhibition of California art, architecture, and design from 1850 to the present.

Pasadena offers the SoR attendees a surprising combination of sophisticated charm, culture, history, and fun, in the mild and beautiful winter of Southern California [average temperature: High 70°F (21°C)/Low 45°F (7°C) with an average rainfall of 3.9 in (99 mm) in February]. For more information about the city, visit the City of Pasadena website.

We look forward to welcoming you to Pasadena!

  • From LAX the most economical way (less than $10/trip) to get to Pasadena is to take the FlyAway Bus to Union Station (be sure the bus goes to Union Station!) and transfer to the Gold Line metro (Direction Sierra Madre Villa). The Del Mar Station is less than a 0.5 mile walk from the hotel and convention center. (Taxis will NOT be available at Del Mar Station.)

Note that some of the listed shared vans charge less for additional passengers when you take the same van for the same destination. A shared van from LAX will cost approximately $25 to a Pasadena hotel, a bit less ($23) from Burbank (BUR).

  • There are also taxi cabs available in each airport, with minimum charge of $35 from Burbank airport and $71 from LAX to Old Town Pasadena. However, note that charges may increase quickly, especially in rush hour traffic. City Cab: (818) 848-1000, United Taxi: (800) 892-8294, Yellow Cab & Checker Cab: (800) 750-4400.
